Is the TECNO Camon 20 Premier Worth the Upgrade Over Camon 19?

If you’ve been in the tech-world long enough, then you probably don’t need an explanation to understand and acknowledge how common it is for manufacturers to release updated versions of their flagship devices, promising better features and performance. TECNO devices have had a fair share of the Kenyan market and remains a prominent player in the smartphone market, recently launched its Camon 20 series to succeed the Camon 19 series from the previous year. But the burning question which still lingers in the minds of at least most of us is if the upgrade to the TECNO Camon 20 Premier is really worth it?

Quick Summary:

  • Much better cameras: The Camon 20 Premier boasts a 50MP primary lens with sensor shift stabilization, a 108MP ultrawide lens, and a 2MP depth sensor, resulting in better photo and video quality compared to the Camon 19 Pro’s 64MP main and 50MP portrait cameras.
  • Enhanced Performance: With a Dimensity 8050 processor, 16GB RAM, and 256GB storage, the Camon 20 Premier outperforms the Camon 19 Pro, especially for heavy multitasking and gaming.
  • Upgraded Operating System and Interface: The Camon 20 Premier runs on Android 13 and HiOS 13, offering a newer and smoother user experience compared to the Camon 19 Pro’s Android 12 and HiOS 8.6.
  • Faster Charging: While both phones feature a 5000mAh battery, the Camon 20 Premier supports 45W fast charging, significantly reducing charging time compared to the Camon 19 Pro’s 33W fast charging.
  • Premium Design and Display: The Camon 20 Premier sports a lychee-pattern leather design with Magic Skin technology, a waterproof finish, and a vibrant AMOLED screen, providing a more luxurious feel and immersive viewing experience compared to the Camon 19 Pro’s LCD screen.

Camera Performance:

The TECNO Camon 20 Premier introduces significant upgrades in its camera setup which unlike the previous model features a 50MP primary lens with sensor shift stabilization, a 108MP ultrawide lens, and a 2MP depth sensor. The result of this setup grant us sharper images, better low-light performance, and at the same time improved stabilization compared to the Camon 19 Pro’s 64MP main and 50MP portrait cameras. Additionally, the Camon 20 Premier’s 32MP selfie camera delivers stunning self-portraits with impressive detail and clarity.

Performance and Storage:

When it comes to the performance sphere, the Camon 20 Premier takes the lead with its Dimensity 8050 processor, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. And as expected, this configuration ensures smooth multitasking and seamless gaming experiences, making it ideal for power users. While on the other hand, the Camon 19 Pro which is equipped with a Helio G96 processor, 13GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage, may struggle with intensive tasks and demanding applications.

Operating System and Interface:

The Camon 20 Premier ships with the latest Android 13 and HiOS 13, providing users with the latest features, security updates, and optimizations. In contrast, the Camon 19 Pro initially comes with Android 12 and HiOS 8.6, albeit it recently received an update to Android 13. However, the user experience may vary, with the Camon 20 Premier offering a smoother and more refined interface.

Battery Life and Charging:

Both the Camon 20 Premier and Camon 19 Pro are equipped with 5000mAh batteries which guarantees a long-lasting usage on a single charge. However, the Camon 20 Premier gains an edge with its support for 45W fast charging, allowing it to recharge from 0 to 100% in under an hour. In comparison, the Camon 19 Pro’s 33W fast charging may take longer, requiring approximately an hour and a half to reach full capacity.

Design and Display:

In terms of design, the Camon 20 Premier stands out with its lychee-pattern leather finish, utilizing TECNO’s innovative Magic Skin technology for a premium feel. Additionally, the device boasts a vibrant AMOLED screen, offering deeper blacks and more vivid colors compared to the Camon 19 Pro’s LCD display. Furthermore, the inclusion of stereo speakers enhances the multimedia experience on the Camon 20 Premier, providing immersive sound quality. And if the Tecno series is not something you’d be interested to consider, the mid-range segment has plenty to offer with the likes of Vivo V29 5G and Samsung Galaxy A55.
